conceived during the pandemic, chapter ii explores the paradox of intimacy and isolation through a pair of slip-on mules bearing the silhouettes of human faces. the words ‘together’ and ‘apart’ are inscribed on their respective outsoles, concealed beneath the feet.
the chapter extends into a video performance developed in tokyo in collaboration with japanese artist haruhiko kawaguchi, whose practice investigates human intimacy through the vacuum compression of bodies. wearing the mules, models are enclosed within transparent, vacuum-sealed membranes, translating the tension between proximity and separation into a physical condition.
designed to exist beyond a fixed exhibition space, the video transforms the viewer’s screen into the site of the performance. shamanic drumming and rhythmic breathwork accompany the compressed figures, creating a sensory experience that oscillates between discomfort and meditation, drawing the viewer into the psychological space of the work.
